Skin saviours from my recent Indian trip.
I got back from India 3 days ago, but I’ve been terribly jetlagged. My main issue is trying to fall asleep. I slept at 6:30am the first night, and while my sleep patterns are slowly returning back to normal (I managed to sleep at 3am last night), I still feel really lethargic. Also, I’m rarely hungry. I don’t usually get jetlagged so bad, I wonder if it’s just a sign that I’m getting old!
I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about the trip. Like all family reunions, there were lots of great moments and some awkward ones. I spent most of my time at my parents’ place in Kerala, South India. I grew up in Kerala, but I’d never really realised how vibrant the landscape was until I left Kerala. There are endless rows of coconut trees that cover the landscape in a blanket of green. The deep red of the soil stains everything it touches, and it is a contrast against the bright green paddy fields, which, in some places, seem to stretch forever. View Post
Summer’s finally here. We had a very unconvincing spring in Melbourne this year: lots of cold days with dabbles of patchy sunshine. Hopefully that changes. I started putting together this natural sunscreen post a few weeks ago in anticipation of warmer weather. As I was working on it, I had a chat with my friend Samantha Sargent of Be Naturally You on the topic. Be Naturally You is one of my favourite Australian green beauty retailers, and Sam is a wealth of knowledge on all things green beauty (and just healthy living, overall). Not only did she provide amazing information on sun protection, but she also sent me some of her favourite sunscreens to try.
After my chat with Sam, I thought it would be best to do a Q&A with her so I can share her insights with you all. Here’s an excerpt from our chat: View Post
Radiant Earth of Deep Delight:
This fragrance opens with a blast of cardamom, vanilla and sandalwood. The combination gives it a gourmand, dessert-like quality. As the fragrance settles down on the skin, the sweetness subsides and I start to smell the vetiver and vetiver mitti. Both these notes give the fragrance a serene, earthy quality. The other notes, especially the cardamom, continue to linger, and they stop the fragrance from smelling too much like incense. The deep dry down is a smoky, earthy sandalwood that’s both sexy and meditative.
I think of a modern-day yogi when I smell this scent. Someone who practices vinyasa, follows a holistic diet and exudes a natural, effortless charm. I think Living Libations co-founder Ron Obadia embodies this man perfectly. Personally, while I really like this fragrance, I don’t think I have the right personality for it to be my signature scent. I reserve this scent for quiet evenings spent by the fire (or heater) reading a book. I find it very atmospheric. View Post
Living Libations is a Canadian brand with an original take on natural skincare. They have a unique, whimsical aesthetic, and their super-concentrated products are made with the purest natural ingredients available. I’d reviewed some of their products in the past, and I was thrilled to receive the following products to test and review. Here are my thoughts:
Living Libations Best Skin Ever Sandalwood:
Living Libations is best known for their Best Skin Ever range, and this is one of the more recent iterations of their bestseller. So what is Best Skin Ever? It’s an oil cleanser that you can also use as a face, hair and body oil. Unlike most other versions of Best Skin Ever, the sandalwood does not contain coconut oil. This makes it perfect for those of us who are sensitive to coconut oil. No matter how pure, products with coconut oil break me out, and I’m so glad this is 100% coconut oil-free.
Living Libations is one of those rare brands that have unanimously positive reviews online. Normally, you always see one or two people complaining about cystic acne from using cleansing oils, but their Sea Buckthorn Best Skin Ever Cleansing Oil has probably the most number of positive reviews I’ve seen for ANY skincare product. These reviews are not just positive but poetic: people often use words like ‘magic’ and ‘alchemy’ to describe their experience with the brand.
Living Libations is a Canadian brand created by Nadine Artemis, and if you are interested, do check out her YouTube channel, where she demonstrates some of her products with husband Ron. Living Libations products range from cleansers to dental care, hair care, perfumes, salt inhalers and personal lubricants. They are all very intriguing formulations, and if I had unlimited funds, I’d try every one of them. Since I’m always on a strict budget, I had to narrow my options down to three.
