Malaya Organics Review

Malaya Organics founder Katya Slepak created her Brooklyn-based line after suffering from horrendous cystic acne. This story resonated with me because I became interested in green skincare after suffering from really bad acne. Malaya products are designed to ‘balance and restore the skin, the same way food restores bodies.’ They are designed to nourish skin and hair with the most vital nutrients, to restore balance and boost radiance.

I’ve been using the line for over two months, and here’s what I think:

Rejuvenating Face Serum: This ultra-light face oil contains 26 ingredients, including lenoleic acid-rich Siberian cedar nut oil and collagen-synthesising gardenia absolute. Designed to deeply hydrate and brighten, it is both ‘youth promoting and suitable for problem-prone skin.’

First of all, I absolutely love the packaging. The spherical glass bottle is super adorable and so different from all the purple glass bottles out there. It smells like honeyed jasmine tea to me. I didn’t love this scent when I first tried it, but I’ve grown to love it. It feels extremely light on the skin, and it doesn’t upset my skin in any way. I find it very soothing to use after being out in the sun. It’s also great for pigmentation and scarring. I don’t usually use oils during the day, but I find this light enough for daytime use. I have combination/oily skin and this doesn’t break me out or leave a greasy residue on my skin. Highly recommend.

Price: $95 for 25ml.

Black Clay & Geranium Detoxifying Beauty Bar: This black soap contains clay, geranium, olive oil and coconut oil. I don’t always love bar soaps, but is easy to use and non-drying. I prefer non-foaming face cleansers, so I use it mainly as a body cleanser. It has an earthy geranium scent that I like.

Price: $14 for 25g.

Repair & Style Hair Oil: I really didn’t expect to like this product, but I think it’s one of the best hair oils I’ve tried so far. What I like about it is how light and non-greasy it is. It doesn’t weigh hair down and it actually helps hold my style (most oils leave my hair flat and lifeless). The scent is very subtle, so this won’t give you any nasty headaches. You can also use this as a pre-shampoo treatment, but I prefer to use a drop or two of this after I wash my hair.

Price: $48 for 30 ml.

Ingredients: Coconut Oil*, Olive Oil*, Argan Oil*, Hemp Oil*, Apricot Kernel Oil*, Jojoba Oil*, Sweet Almond Oil*, Avocado Oil*, Sunflower Oil*, Borage Oil*, Herbal extracts – [Rosemary Leaf*, Nettle Leaf*, Lavender Flower*, Chamomile Flower*, Elder Flower*], Proprietary blend of Essential Oils and Absolutes * including – Clary Sage Oil*, Bulgarian Rose Absolute*, Sandalwood Oil* and Geranium Oil* (ideal for falling and dry hair), Vitamin E Tocopherols (GMO Free).

Moisturising Body Oil (Woods): This is a medium-weight body oil. Like most body oils, I like to use it on sopping wet skin, before patting dry gently with a towel. I normally love wood scents, but I’m on the fence with this one. It smells more like crushed leaves than wood to me, but it seems to smell woodier once it sinks into the skin. I’d recommend getting a sample to test the fragrance before committing to a full bottle. Great oil, otherwise.

Price: $78 for 120ml.

Lavender Lip Saviour: I am a bit of a lip balm junkie, and this thin, pencil-like lip balm has become one of my go-tos. It has a refreshing peppermint/lavender scent, and it is rich enough to hydrate the driest of lips. Big thumbs up.

Price: $12 for 2g.
