Beauty Heroes January 2017 Beauty Discovery Box Review: Maya Chia The Super Couple Astaxanthin + Chia Ultra Luxe Face Oil and Supercritical Chia Waterless Wonder Balm

I’ve been hearing about Beauty Heroes since I started my blog, and many of my friends have been long-term subscribers. The original green beauty box that started it all, the US$39 (approx.)/month subscription service introduces its subscribers to a new green beauty brand every month. These boxes normally contain one Hero Product (usually the star product from that month’s brand) and one or two sidekicks. This month’s hero brand is Maya Chia. The hero product this month is The Super Couple Astaxanthin + Chia Ultra Luxe Face Oil, and the sidekick is their Supercritical Chia Waterless Wonder Balm (these have got to be some of the longest names I’ve ever had to type out!).

As the name implies, the Maya Chia line explores the use of supercritical chia seed oil in skincare. Rich in Omega 3, chia seed oil reduces the appearance of fine lines and increases firmness of the skin, without leaving a greasy feeling behind.

The Super Couple Face Oil (value: US$85) combines chia seed oil with astaxanthin and a number of essential oils. A natural carotenoid, astaxanthin is clinically proven to have 65x the strength of Vitamin C to fight free radicals. It helps eliminate lines, age spots, pigmentation and other visible signs of ageing. In addition to this, astaxanthin contains natural sun protection that can help prevent light-induced skin damage.

When I received it, my initial reaction was that I really didn’t need another oil in my routine. Oils often tend to be the hero products for most green beauty brands, and I currently have close to 30 oils in my rotation. Little did I know this would outperform most of the other oils in my collection and become one of my top picks! After using it for about 3 weeks, I’ve come to the conclusion that it is possibly the best face oil you can buy for $85.

Here’s why:

1) The results I get from this are comparable to oils that cost two or three times as much. This is a multitasking day and night oil that suits most skin types: it moisturises, purifies, blurs imperfections and corrects uneven skin tone. Impressive!
2) It’s very non-greasy. I normally use oils only at night because most oils leave my skin oily by the end of the day. This moisturises really well without leaving a greasy film behind. It disappears instantly into the skin.
3) It helps with pigmentation and breakouts. The more regularly I use it, the clearer my skin seems to get.
4) It contains natural sunscreens to protect skin from the sun (you will, however, require a separate sunscreen if you are spending a lot of time in the sun).

The only negative I can think about this oil is that it doesn’t smell as great as, say, offerings from May Lindstrom, African Botanics or Vintner’s Daughter. This does not imply that The Super Couple doesn’t smell good. The deep orange oil has a citrus smell with a slight hint of seaweed (I don’t know if I’m imagining this, but the astaxanthin is extracted from micro algae, which, I guess, is seaweed) that I like (but don’t love). The smell dissipates quickly, anyway.

The sidekick is a mini of Maya Chia’s Waterless Wonder Balm (full size value: $42). Contrary to what I initially thought, this shea butter-based balm is NOT a face balm (the reason I mention this is because I have other friends who mistook this for a face balm, as well). This is meant to moisturise and heal dry areas like lips, cuticles, heels and elbows. It has a strong orange blossom scent that I personally like. My favourite way to use this is as a lip balm. It instantly soothes and heals my very dry lips without leaving a shiny/white residue behind.

Final Thoughts:

I think Beauty Heroes is phenomenal. I think what really differentiates it from other boxes is the way it focuses on a single brand to really give you a well-rounded, immersive experience of that brand. This is especially great for men and women who are new to green beauty and want to discover brands that resonate with them to build their own beauty wardrobe. Beauty Heroes also have an online store that sells offerings from the brands they curate, and subscribers get 15% off all year round. Most green beauty products never go on sale, so this is a fantastic way to get hold of some of the best green beauty products at discounted prices (it also means no more endless searches on Google for discount codes). Also, I love the fact that they deliver internationally. I live in Australia, and I was blown away by how quickly I received my box (I got it within 4-5 days). I think America has the most cutting-edge green beauty products, and Beauty Heroes, for me, is a fantastic way to experience brands I probably wouldn’t try otherwise (most of the brands they have curated so far have been American, but there have been some non-American ones, as well). I’m so grateful it introduced me to Maya Chia: I’ll definitely be trying more products from them in the future.

This month was my 3rd Beauty Heroes box so far, and I am loving it as well! Getting to try one luxury green beauty brand per month has been such a wonderful experience. I enjoyed the serum (although did not detect a significant difference in my hyperpigmentation), but the standout to me was actually the balm. I also originally thought that it was for the face, until I checked the ingredients and saw shea butter :/ I have been applying it every night to dry patches on my hands or body before going to bed, and wake up with such soft skin. I cannot imagine a nightly routine without it now!
