This was an impulse purchase for me, but I’m glad I bought it. My friend Alex was placing an order on Cult Beauty and asked me if I wanted anything, and I picked this. I’d been looking at this mat for a while, but I wasn’t sure I’d end up using it. But I’m glad to report that I’m using it a lot more than I thought I would!
What is it?
It’s an acupressure mat based on the ancient Indian practice of lying on a bed of nails for therapeutic benefits. The ‘nails’ in this case are made of durable plastic and there are 8,820 of them on each mat!
Impressions so far:
I’ve had this for about a month now. I was surprised by how sharp the nails were when I first got it, but my skin has got used to it. Seasoned users may be okay with direct skin contact, but I’d recommend wearing a thin top until you get used to the sensation of lying on thousands of sharp plastic spikes. I didn’t really think it did much in terms of relaxation/stress-relief the first couple of times I used it, but recently, when I was especially sore after a workout, this really helped. It’s not as good as getting an actual massage, but it’s probably the next best option. I now spend about 10 minutes on this in shavasana after every workout.
I’d highly recommend buying the matching pillow, if you are thinking of buying this. I didn’t buy it, and I sort of regret it now. I feel like I need something to support my neck/head when I’m lying on the mat, and their half moon pillows look perfect for this.
