I met Sabrina, the fabulous founder of Keeko, in Sydney last month, and she told me she’d love to hear my thoughts on her oil pulling sachets. I’d heard good things about Keeko, and I was excited to try it. Sabrina had spoken passionately about organic ingredients and clever packaging during the short chat we had (she loves Tata Harper, just like me!), so I was sure her products would be very high quality. And I wasn’t wrong. I’d tried oil pulling with pure coconut oil in the past, and while I liked the idea of shiny white teeth, I’d found the whole process tedious and unenjoyable. It was a pain to melt the right amount of oil and I hated the fatty flavour of coconut oil. Keeko makes swirling oil in your mouth as sexy as possible, with its colourful packaging and exciting flavours. If you’ve never tried oil pulling, this will be a fantastic introduction to it. If you already do it and are bored of plain old coconut oil, this is a great way to add some excitement to it.
What is oil pulling and what does it do?
Oil pulling is a natural Ayurvedic way to improve oral health. All you do is just swish coconut or sesame oil in your mouth for five to fifteen minutes. It whitens your teeth, reduces sensitivity and removes plaque – naturally! It is also said to help with skin conditions, arthritis, asthma and hormonal imbalances.
What is Keeko?
These are individually-packed flavoured coconut oil sachets that make oil pulling a lot more fun. They are extremely travel-friendly and come in three flavours: Morning Mint, Citrus Burst and Sweet Sensation. Their assorted ‘Lucky Dip’ bags are a great way to try them all (Morning Mint is my favourite).
How do I use it?
I use it first thing in the morning. I warm the sachet under running hot water to melt it and swish the liquid in my mouth. I find that it’s best to distract yourself with other things as you are doing it, so I have a shower, dry my hair and even cleanse and moisturise. The packaging tells you to swish it for 5 to 15 minutes, but I always try to aim for the 15-20 minute mark (the key is to do it gently, so you don’t get jaw/throat fatigue!). When I first tried oil pulling, I was told to swish it until the colourless oil turned white, because that indicates that the toxins have been ‘pulled’ out of your system. I don’t know how true this is, but I find this simple alchemy satisfying. I make sure I spit it out into a plastic bag because I don’t accidentally want the oil to clog up my drain. I’ve been using it everyday for the last one week as part of an intense two week detox and whitening treatment, but Keeko reckons you just need to use it twice a week to maintain good oral health!
Does it work?
I’ve used it for 7 days now, and I definitely do see a difference. Since it’s an all-natural product, you won’t get instant results like a whitening strip, so please don’t expect miracles. It will whiten your teeth gradually.
